Appleby Grammar School is an Inclusive school, in which all members of staff are teachers of students with additional needs. Teachers are supported by an enthusiastic and experienced learning support team, consisting of 9 members of staff. The Learning Support Team aim to support all students, but particularly those students who may need extra help due to a specific learning difficulty or lack of confidence in a particular aspect of their work.
The range of specific learning difficulties includes: dyslexia, dyspraxia, Asperger’s Syndrome, ADHD and dyscalculia. We also work closely with students who have an Education Health Care Plan. Students are mainly supported within the classroom, but also within small groups and when necessary on a one to one basis.
We work closely with outside agencies and maintain close links with Specialist Practitioners. The Learning Support Department works closely with our Feeder Primary schools, to ensure that the important period of Transition from Primary to Secondary school, can be as smooth as possible.
The department is based within the Learning Skills Centre, which provides a positive environment for small group work and equipped with a number of resources to support students who have additional needs.
The Learning Support department also supervise and support students within the daily lunchtime Homework Club.
