Physical Education
Introduction/Ethos:
Physical Education is an essential part of life and the curriculum at Appleby Grammar School.
Here students learn about the benefits of regular participation in sport and exercise and are always encouraged to perform to the best of their ability.
Students are expected to apply high standards of behaviour and effort toward all of the many activities undertaken. Students are encouraged to help run extra curricular activities, and gain sports accreditation such as gymnastic judging awards.
PE is a very popular subject at AGS with many students participating in extra-curricular clubs before, during and after school. We have good links with our local sports clubs and encourage pupils to attend to develop their skills in a competitive external environment.
Lessons:
In key stage 3 (y7-9) all students receive 2 hours of Physical Education per week and in key stage 4 (y10-11) students receive 3 hours across a fortnight. The Physical Education Curriculum consists of many of the following activities; Rugby, football, dance, netball, gymnastics, trampolining, health and fitness, volleyball, handball, athletics, rounders, cross country and orienteering.
Examination PE:
At KS4 we offer GCSE PE following the OCR syllabus which is a two year course, begun in year 10 and examined in year 11. This is taught in 5 hours across a fortnight in addition to the core PE lessons. At KS5 we follow the OCR A level PE syllabus which starts in year 12 and is examined in year 13 and consists of 8 hours teaching across a fortnight.
Extra Curricular Activities:
The PE staff at Appleby offer a wide range of lunchtime and after school activities for students of all abilities. Teams are involved and perform well in local, county and national leagues and cups.
We also organise sporting visits such as tennis at Wimbledon, T20 Blast cricket at Old Trafford in Manchester, Netball Superleague at Manchester and rugby at Newcastle Falcons.
Career links:
Many students who express an interest in sport and PE use the skills they have developed to pursue careers in sports development and teaching, Resource and facilities management.
