KS4 English
English Language and English Literature
Every student in school will study for two separate English GCSEs: English Language and English Literature. The linear courses will be assessed through two final examinations in both Language and Literature.
English Language
Students will read a wide range of historical and contemporary fiction and non-fiction texts on this course. They will have opportunities to develop higher-order reading and critical thinking skills that encourage genuine enquiry into different texts and themes. There will also be an emphasis on students’ ability to think creatively and respond imaginatively to set tasks.
In the exams, technical accuracy will be important. Students will need to be able to demonstrate a confident control of Standard English and write grammatically correct sentences, deploying figurative language and analysing texts.
Assessments
Paper 1: Fiction and Imaginative Writing (40%)
Paper 2: Non-fiction and Transactional Writing (60%)
Non-examination Assessment: Spoken Language (separate endorsement, graded Pass, Merit or Distinction)
English Literature
Students will read a wide range of classic and modern literature and learn to make connections across their reading. They will read a range of prose, poetry and drama in depth, being critical and evaluative, so that they are able to discuss and explain their understanding and ideas. Students will develop the habit of reading widely in order to appreciate the depth and power of the English literary heritage.
This course also supports the technical aspects of the Language course, with an emphasis on accurate, effective and analytical expression in response to their reading, using Standard English.
Assessments
Paper 1: Shakespeare and Post-1914 Literature (50%)
Paper 2: 19th-century Novel and Poetry since 1789 (50%)
